Where Do Fruit Flies Come From?

Fruit flies are a common household pest that can infest homes and be a nuisance year-round. They are tiny, measuring about ⅛” long, and can remain hidden until you see them flying throughout the areas they’ve infested. The larvae and eggs of fruit flies will remain on food and other surfaces until they hatch, at which point you may see dozens swarming.

Although they don’t bite and may seem harmless, bacteria and pathogens can be spread as fruit flies land on food items. Fruit flies can quickly become a frustrating pest problem, but knowing what to look out for and taking swift action will help prevent infestations.

The Lifecycle of Fruit Flies

Fruit flies have a fairly short lifecycle, making them prolific breeders. The female lays eggs on the surface of fermenting or decaying organic matter. Within 24 to 30 hours, the eggs hatch into larvae.

The larvae feed on the yeast and microorganisms found in their breeding site. After about 5-6 days, the larvae pupate and undergo metamorphosis. Within approximately 6-8 days, adult fruit flies emerge from the pupal cases ready to mate and continue the cycle. The entire lifecycle from egg to adult can be completed in as little as 8-10 days under optimal conditions.

Common Causes of Fruit Fly Infestations

Fruit fly infestations typically start when these pests find access to ripe or fermenting produce. Common sources include overripe fruit, vegetables, recycling bins, sink drains and garbage disposals, and even damp mops or rags. Any location where organic matter is left to decompose can become a breeding ground for fruit flies.

Fruit flies can find their way into homes through open spaces in doors or windows, or be brought in on items such as grocery bags or fruit and other produce. Their small size makes it easy for them to infest homes unnoticed, and a prompt response to any signs is necessary to prevent an infestation.

Signs of a Fruit Fly Infestation

When there is a fruit fly infestation, it’s important to know what to look out for and take action as soon as possible.

  • Small Flying Insects Near Food. Since fruit flies feed on and breed on decaying or organic matter, they are typically spotted around fruit or food left in a sink or trash.
  • Tiny Pin Marks on Fruit. When fruit flies land on the surface of fruit, they will sometimes leave a small pin-sized hole. Their larvae can also create holes in the surface as they eat through produce. If you're noticing small holes and premature decaying of fruit and other produce, the culprit may be fruit flies.

Some pests can be misidentified as fruit flies. Drain flies are commonly mistaken for fruit flies. They are about the same size, but fruit flies have clear wings and a smooth appearance, whereas drain flies have a moth-like body.

Effective Fruit Fly Prevention

Preventing a fruit fly infestation starts with proper sanitation and storage practices. When you keep your kitchen clean and free of food debris, you'll significantly reduce the likelihood of an infestation. Promptly dispose of overripe or rotting produce, and ensure that garbage cans are sealed tightly and emptied frequently. Before you bring produce home from the store be aware of any signs of infestations on the items.

Store produce in the refrigerator rather than on countertops, and clean up any spills or food residue on surfaces. Be sure your screens on windows and doors are intact to prevent fruit flies from entering your home, and use airtight containers for storing food items that can attract fruit flies.

When to Seek Professional Pest Control

While home remedies and prevention strategies can result in trapping some fruit flies, professional pest services can identify the pest problem and ensure it is under control. If a fruit fly infestation persists despite your best efforts, it may indicate a larger underlying issue, such as hidden breeding sites or moisture issues in the area.

Professional pest control services have the expertise and tools to accurately identify and eliminate the source of the infestation. They can save time and provide you with peace of mind that your pest problems are under control. Don't hesitate to seek professional pest services before the situation becomes overwhelming.
